About Me

I began my musical journey in the 6th grade,at Helotes Elementry in 1973.Our band director was B.B. McKinny jr. Many will recognize this name, because his father B.B. McKinney, wrote several of the hymns in the Baptist Hymnal.I originally started on the trombone, but after the first couple of months of beginner band, the tuba player quit band and I switched over to the tuba. In the 7th grade I attended  Pat Neff Middle School . Our directors were Leyland Schultz  and Mr. Gaston. In the 8th grade, I attended Coke Stevenson Middle School. Our director was Jim Cain . The summer before high school, I went to band camp at Texas Tech University. I played the euphonium as a secondary instrument at camp.  In the 9th grade at  John Marshall High school came big changes.First of all, as we all know , summers in Texas are HOT and that Reynolds brass sousaphone was heavy!!!! Especially since I was about 110 lbs.Our director was Charles Kuentz Jr. As a freshman I got to march in The Tournament Of Roses Parade, in Passedena Calf. The band from the year before won the honours  and I was lucky enough to get to go.My sister was a  horn player in that band ,but she graduated and didn't get to go.Under Mr. Kuentz's direction I learned a  tremendous amount about music , but maybe more importantly, about life. I joined The Helotes Area community Band shortly after it was founded .
